New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
